How Not To Go Wrong And Choose An Appropriate Essay Format
For every student certainly in high school and college, essay writing is a way of life. You'll need to write dozens of essays during your academic career. These will be short, medium and long essays. These will be personal essays, argumentative essays, research papers and all sorts of other prose writing activities. There are many steps you need to take in order to become as good as possible in writing essays.
The one area where many students go wrong and lose marks accordingly is in the area of reading the instructions. You might finish up writing what you think is a top-quality essay but if you fail to read the instructions you may very well fail the essay itself. Some of the instructions which you must religiously adhere to include the following.
- The correct format as decreed by your teacher or professor.
- The correct number of words as listed by your teacher.
- Sticking to the topic or answering the question.
- Knowing how to proofread and edit your essay.
Essays can be written in a variety of formats. When it comes to their structure the most common and basic essays are either four paragraphs or five paragraphs. If you are required to present the layout of your essay in a certain format such as APA, you need to learn the rules and requirements of such formats. You will need to present your title page the correct way, use the appropriate font, have the right width for the margins and of course know how to cite any references you have used throughout the writing of your essay.
The standard layout of your four or five paragraph essay is set in stone. It begins with an introduction and concludes with a conclusion. In between those two paragraphs will be the fact paragraphs. Each one of those will have one main point and possibly one or more supporting points. There will be no new information in the conclusion and your thesis statement will appear in your introduction and possibly be the opening sentence of your essay.
Do not vary the format. Use what is expected and what is required. If you use the appropriate essay format and combine that by writing a well-researched and well-written piece of prose, you stand an excellent chance of getting an excellent mark. Of course the writing skills are important but so is the correct format.
